I am in need of a pair of shoes that sit in between a my Boat Shoes and by Alden Oxfords. I would like them to be going out, semi-formal occasions, and even to wear with jeans.
I prefer lighter shades of brown. Under $200 would be nice. I currently have : ![]() & ![]() & ![]() |

Chukkas? Maybe a blucher? There's such a Trad influence, I'm tempted to say plain toe blucher in shell, but lighter shell is hard to come by these days.

Aside from style, cost is going to be a driving issue. Coming in under $200 is a tough price point. You might try www.grapevinehill.com. What is your size? The www.teamshoeseaport.com site had some incredible deals on Aldens recently, including some real wardrobe staples in the $160 range. The www.aldenshoes.com site also has some nice specials on Aldens. Other than that, I'd troll ebay and ebay.co.uk. Used is another option to consider.

I know Cole Haan doesn't get much love around here (and rightfully so), but I really like this style. I can only presume that, at their $475 retail price, they are significanly better constructed than CH's normal lines of shoes (probably not up to Alden or AE standards, but good). The price at Gilt.com is $228.
http://cdn2.gilt.com/images/share/up...g?4_1232046989 http://www.gilt.com/s/colemen/product/9528355 Here's the description of the same shoe in the oxford style from the CH site. There are none of the oxfords available on CH's site; I'm assuming they sold their stock of the oxford to Gilt Group. "Luxe hand-burnished monkstrap in fine Italian grain leather and concealed NIKE AIR Technology for ultimate cushioning. Authenic Norweigen welt. Artisan hand-stitched details. Genuine Bologna construction. Fully leather lined. Leather sole with stacked leather/rubber heel. Handcrafted in Italy." |

I recommend Alden longwings on the Plaza last for your next purchase. And every subsequent purchase too.

Right now I'm wearing the Trickers Marlow in pebble grained brown.
I like grimslade's Alden Longwing suggestion - the store in Seattle (J. Gilbert) has what appears to be some exemplary wingtips. The $200 limit means you'll probably have to scour ebay and the sale racks - but it's not impossible. I built up most of my shoe collection that way. I think only 7 or 8 pairs (and I have a lot more) were more than $200. Some other suggestions - a dark brown monkstrap (such as the BB version or the C&J Savile) or chelsea/jodhpur boot (such as the AE Taunton or RM Williams Craftsman) If you want to go the loafer route, I think the Alden Bit loafer shows up with regularity on Ebay. |

I think you're on the right track; that one is more in the jeans level of formality. I like penny loafers, but prefer something with a lower vamp than that style. +1 on not digging the two-tone.
