Another early morning....final coats applied to Lobb shoe - will get some finish shots done when I buff it out.
While waiting for one of the coats to dry, got started on an interesting custom job for a regular client....not so much the finish but I am carving off the top grain all around the medallion....getting to a real casual, beat up finish for denim. [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]razor blade to carve away the grain leaving a rough finish and a metal file, heavy grit, to rough up the upper so the darker dye settles in in swirls. |

With respect to my earlier "mad scientist in his shoe lab" comment. QED.
Not my cup of tea - but an interesting technique. You may want to cross-post this over in SW&D. |

I think we should make blue masking tape on the soles a new fad. It'll be like those cars with the neon lights running beneath the running boards. Everyone will have to have it. Let's go!

I'm looking forward to seeing the Lobbs finished and waxed.
Ron... I'm thinking a tan pair of C&J from Plal could be coming your way from me soon. |

we all know that shoes are not meant to be worn, only photographed for the shoe damage thread. the blue tape is just an extra precaution against dust.

Lobb monks finished....good camera at the office, but took this this morning as these have to ship today.
From where I left off, we did 2 more coats of dye in the mixture, then went back over the toe cap and the heels one more time in straight brown. Last night the finishing routine was: clean/condition with Crema Alpina - brush and buff one coat of Dark Brown wax - Saphir MDO - brush and buff Strip heels with deglazer....I don't know why, but I like to make the heels antiqued like the toes - I think it looks nice. one coat of Dark Brown cream - Saphir - brush and buff one coat of Dark Green just on toe cap and heels - Saphir - brush and buff another coat of Dark Brown cream - Saphir - brush and buff clean up the buckles from dye residue remove tape 2 coats Saphir Renoveteur - including soles, just to condition them a bit. FINISHED About a three hour process last night in the finishing....total for this job was about 6 hours, which is alot. Usually about half that amount of time is sufficient, but I had a lot of problems with the toe and heel area's due to the previous work done on this pair. I still don't know what was used, but it really, for all intents and purposes, made it impossible to get as good a coverage as I usually get. Therefore, this pair is 'antiqued' as the only solution. Actually, the coverage is fine but the highlights are sort of pre-determined by the previous work, not buffed out by me so much. I think they look nice.... [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]edit - Wow, the pictures with flash show much more 'marbeling' than is seen by the naked eye. Really, this came out very well....in my finishing you can see a reflection from over 6 inches away. In regular light these glow, and the coloring blends very nicely. |

I think you're right. I am looking around for a light tan monk myself with my eye on a pair of Trickers, but they're perhaps not as sleek as I'd like. When I find the right shoe I'll probably send it your way.
Presumably you can't go lighter than the shoe originally is; or can you, using a bleach? Do you have somewhere a more exhaustive gallery of your work? I'm especially interested in tonal gradients, marbling and lighter shades of brown. |
