Yeah, I understand the reasoning. There was a similar discussion on eGullet about why good cocktail bars still stock vodka, though a small handful of daring ones don't.

Dogfish Head sucks. Typical American microbrew pissing contest for highest ABV.

im tired and definately not in a good mood.. nothing seems to cheer me up, and i still have some work to do this weekend something seems to drain all the energy out of me, so halfway trough the afternoon i feel the need to sleep....and im way to young for that crap..

on top of that I could just as well post in the misantropy thread, looking at people around me in a rational matter makes me want to hurt them, or at least remove their genes from the genepool...such stupidity cannot be allowed to live on...

I guess i need a vacation..

Huh? When did THAT happen to me?

I'm confused. What's inherently wrong with vodka? From a bartending guide on my shelf I can count nearly a hundred drinks that call for vodka. I can't say how many are "quality" or perhaps classic, but, for instance, how do you get a vodka martini without vodka on the shelf?

See this eGullet thread.

If you go to the top ten cocktail bars in New York, you'll see maybe two or three drinks out of several hundred that use vodka.

And if you look through good cocktail books like Imbibe!, you'll see the same thing.

The whole anti-vodka movement annoys me.

It is merely a backlash against a perfectly authentic and extremely storied spirit that has unfortunately become the spirit of choice for drinks that both defy and deny those joys of spirits that connoisseurs so desperately wish to share. This does not mean that there is anything inherently irredeemable about the spirit. And I find it thoroughly unfortunate that the small number of people who share my devoted appreciation of fine cocktails and spirits is numbered with so many who share this condemnation, out of, I believe, a fervor that is to devotion as nationalism is to patriotism. It is another way to define a line, a line between us and them, and in that definition one of the daily tragedies of life has occurred.

Does it really matter that only a few drinks out of hundreds at the 'top cocktail bars in New York' feature vodka? How many feature Kummel? How many feature Strega, or Pineau des Charentes? Anyway, the best cocktail bar I've ever enjoyed features only two....and this means what?

I've just dumped my gf. I know it was the right decision and one day she will understand but wow, does this feel fucked up.

I agree. (I still prefer Scotch though.)

Insane insurance rates until I'm 25 because of teenagers who wreck daddy's Lexus while street racing under the influence.

Interesting stuff to read. What I find particularly interesting are the two chief reasons, I could gather, that people object to vodka.

1. It's simply become ubiquitous and people are just making any old "cocktail" out of it. Even if that drink calls for gin.

2. It has no taste or odor, therefore it adds nothing to the drink.

I made the same argument as 2 on this board and was told I was wrong, because while that might be some sort of ideal, it simply isn't true. So we're left with #1. Vodka's no good because it's too popular and people are bastardizing other drinks with it.

Not a compelling argument against vodka, itself. Rather a good argument against people who bastardize classic drinks, though.
