So in lieu of PMs, my advice for any guys is go to an expensive, hip salon where too-cool-for-school types will give you the best advice for your particular hair. | |

1) just grow it out. there's really no getting around the awkward in-between phase. after it's the proper length take one of the pictures to a competent hair stylist and they'll adjust the lengths.
2) no idea, whenever you feel it gets too long. 3) just wash it with decent quality stuff that won't dry it out. 4) use a bit of light styling cream condition stuff like Kiehl's creme with silk groom. for flips/curls you can get a perm, blowdry them that way, train your hair to do that by messing with it, or maybe it'll just naturally flip. |

I used to support a similar hairstyle before cutting short to what you currently have (complete with the faux hawk). Though I'm back on the process of getting my old hairstyle back. So I may be of some help.
1) How can I let it grow proper? There's really no shortcut here. Once my hair grew to about eye level, I started slicking it back side parted. Made it less awkward looking. Once the back of the hair grow about shoulder/lower neck level, you might want to get them cleaned up a little. 2) How many maintanance cuts per month/ per 2 months I was cutting it about twice per year. Though really depends on the look you're going for. 4) what products to use? Blowdry? gel, wax, clay ???? Gatsby hair wax + blowdry + hairspray. Though if your hair isn't as stiff as mine, you can probably ditch the blowdrier. You will be spending quite sometime styling it. One of the reason I had it cut initially. |

Asian hair can be naturally soft or coarse. You need soft hair to grow it out like that.

this is easy, just let it grow and dump some of that american crew fiber in it when it gets long and tuck it behind your ear.
judging by the length of his hair you have a good year to go. |

It would take at least one full year for you to grow hair long enough for the style. Go to some of the hip Japanese salons (Hong Kong works also) and specifically tell them you want to grow your hair long like those celebs you mentioned, they will understand how to trim your hair. But don't worry about getting fugly in the mean while, it takes a long time. And you will need to keep on growing even when you feel its uncomfortably long at the back.
It does not matter if you have fine or coarse hair for the styles showed in the picture; coarse hair is actually better to stay in shape without using too much moose and spraying gels. Honestly speaking, you need to lose up 10-20 pounds to pull off that look; you have a more rounded face while the hair style specifically was designed for long faces (takeshi kaneshiro) or small faces (kimura takuya). I forgo haircuts for about a year back in '00/'01 for the similar style but decided to quit because I don't have enough hair volume and the shape does not fit my choppy face. |
