    2018 50 Book Challenge

Is this Ian McEwan's Atonement? It's brilliant, his best book, and if you don't like it you must be...eh....different. I even got Ian to sign it for me. Yes I am a groupie.

Clockwise counting 09/50: Elena Ferrante - My Brilliant Friend (2011) An absolutely superb reading experience, I don't hesitate to say that My Brilliant Friend is one of the best novels I have ever read. It's the story of Elena and Lila, two friends who grow up in 1950s Napoli amidst poverty...

Clockwise counting 07/50: Guy Saville - The Afrika Reich (2013) A blurb / review on the cover is from The Economist and says that the book is "a rich and unusual thriller, politically sophisticated and hard to forget". I guess that is all true in some sense but it's actually not that good. It's...

Clockwise counting 04/50: Ian Rankin - Hide and Seek (1990) A young drug addict is found dead from an apparent overdose but there are various signs pointing to a possible murder. Rebus, who since the previous book has been promoted from Detective Sergeant to Detective Inspector, untangles a...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

I am not yet done with the recap of my 2015 reading but don't want to lag behind on 2016, which has come off to a quick start with 3 books in 4 days. Here is how I started the new year. Clockwise counting 01/50: Timothy Hallinan - Breathing Water (2009) Hallinan writes about Poke Rafferty, an...

Clockwise counting 49/50: Hammond Innes - The Strode Venturer (1965) Innes basically writes adventure stories for teenagers or gullible adults but they are exciting in the vein of classic adventure movies, well written if a bit formulaic and fully acceptable entertainment instead of watching TV...

Clockwise counting 46/50: Tana French - Broken Harbor (2012) A family of four is found murdered inside their home in a run-down modern Dublin housing estate. There are no obvious suspects and the first theories are around an "extended suicide" committed by either the husband or the wife. We...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

I need to finish off the 2015 harvest before I can start on the New Year. So for a while, I will continue posting my reading from last year. Clockwise counting 43/50: Arnaldur Indridason - Jar City (2000) Icelandic Scandinavian noir. First in the series of detective Erlendur, another troubled...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

Clockwise counting 40/50: Anthony Quinn - The Rescue Man (2009) I really enjoyed Quinn's most recent novel Curtain Call so I decided to acquire his debut novel. Maybe not as good as his latest but still a very nicely written book about a young architectural historian in WW2 Liverpool, turning...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

Clockwise counting 35/50: Charles ******* - The Trinity Six (2011) This is one of those "thriller type" espionage novels, quite different from Alan Furst and much more straightforward. Nevertheless a good read. Russia expert Sam Gaddis gets on the track of a possible sixth member of the...

My apologies for not being a very active participant this year. I will do better in 2016. I have however surpassed the required 50 books for 2015 with a wide margin and I will post simple capsule reviews of those as fast as I can manage. :D Clockwise counting 30/50: Alan Furst - Dark Star...

I look forward to being insulted. Like you, I have read everything of Houellebecq's writings that have been translated into English and I have always felt somewhat disgusted and ashamed. Submission is already in my next batch of books from Amazon. While I admit to this on an Internet forum...

It was me, your resident expert of Jamaican stream-of-consciousness gangster stories. Some parts feel very repetitive and patience is definitely required. Throughout this very long novel you always have the feeling that it is something special, maybe even great. I gave it a very positive...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

I am not far from you, got 40-something but haven't had the time to catch up on my review posting. No problem reaching the required 50 this year but will not get anywhere near the last 2-3 years high book counts. Like GF, I haven't lacked motivation. It's been work and family and more work.

    2018 50 Book Challenge

Clockwise counting 29/50: Sarah Waters - Fingersmith (2002) A Victorian thriller and love story with spectacular entertainment factor and surprise twists. 2018 50 Book Challenge

Clockwise counting 28/50: Anthony Quinn - Disappeared (2012) I couldn't believe there are two modern authors named Anthony Quinn and I actually thought I was reading a book written by the Liverpool author Quinn who recently wrote the well received novel Curtain Call. This book is instead a...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

Clockwise counting 27/50: Denis Johnson - The Laughing Monsters (2014) Degenerate spies and mercenaries play games of dubious moral or geo-political value in Sierra Leone, Uganda and Congo. I really liked this strange, often beautifully written, tale of deception and twisted love. More Graham...

    2018 50 Book Challenge

We had similar views about this one. I did however think it was decent as pure entertainment in a light-comedy vein. I have some times in the past noticed that the Booker longlist has some strange inclusions. It's obviously a lot harder to get on the shortlist.
