Bass weejuns are still what they always have been, a simply built penny loafer. They were originally made as a casual campus shoe for students, and they can still serve that purpose quite well. They're welted, and as such, fully resolable, thanks to blake/rapid construction (or something very similar).

The leather is corrected grain, and not always that great, but it's enough to keep going for years. It's certainly not the very soft oil tanned corrected grain you might find on some other cheap dress shoes or quasi sneakers. The ultra shiny finish can be stripped with polish remover if you're willing to put some work into it. If you like the shiny corrected grain, great. Enough seem to like it that Allen Edmonds makes a shiny version by choice. If not, and I deducted style points for this, it takes an investment in time to mitigate that.

They're not lined, don't have any real stiffeners in the construction, so they won't maintain a pristinely shaped toe or anything like that. They're not supposed to. The fit is true to size, though when you buy them they very well might crush your toes. Don't worry about that, they break in.

Simply an unpretentious penny loafer at a good price.
