Excellent score and an excellent fit. These are becoming much more difficult to find. A friend of mine finally found one in good condition in a size 32. A rare size, but it fits her diminutive 5' 2" 100 pound frame.

Fit looks good to me. The sleeves are OK. I wouldn't worry about them.

Nice looking man. The resemblance to you is obvious. He must have had some rank to be photographed with Tony Eden. In modern day, I think only the Navy used the shoulder boards to indicate rank, but I could be wrong.

@Thin White Duke That is impressive–both the Lancaster and the coat. What a time that was. I just finished reading a book about Churchill's first 100 days in office. Those were truly the times that try men's souls. In the US we (officers) aren't issued clothing either and get an allowance to...

I have the same experience, except it isn't limited to middle aged women. I no longer wear a peacoat unless I'm accompanied by my wife. Just too many extra ways to get in trouble.

@Thin White Duke It appears your coat was owned by a Petty Officer First Class. That's an E-6 rank. When a Petty Officer makes Chief, he is authorized to wear a bridgecoat–the same coat as worn by officers. So, he probably retired his peacoat in favor of a bridgecoat, as all of them do.

@Thin White Duke Coats with pewter buttons began to be issued to recruits in the latter part of 1974, with Navy wide changeover required by July 1,1976.* It may very well have been that your coat was in service in 1976, and the sailor was required to replace the original large anchor buttons...

Issue peacoats in Kersey have a smooth finish that isn't at all scratchy. Not sure what your coat has, probably a Melton shell. If you wear a shirt with a collar, the coat shouldn't touch the back of your neck. Your collar may be especially rough and is irritating your neck or you may have a...

My overall impression is that it is too large. It doesn't have a trim appearance through the chest. The sleeves are where I like them; however, the length of the coat appears to hit a few inches below your but. What is your measured chest circumference in inches, please, and can tell you...

It is probably about a 1950 coat. I have never seen cleaning instructions placed in that location. This coat is about two sizes too large for you. The sleeves should end about 1" below the wrist joint and the hem should end about an inch below the butt. A properly fitted peacoat will be trim...

Post a picture of the tag here, and I will give it a shot. I don't have one single thread or article, but I rely on several different sources, developed over the years, to date military clothing.

This coat is at least one to two sizes too large. If one has a peacoat with a good overall fit except the sleeves are too long or a bit too short, that is an easy job for a seamstress. Other alterations are hit or miss, and I don't recommend them. Getting the proper fit of a peacoat usually...
