    I think the shoulders are too wide. You can see the left shoulder actually droop, a sure sign that it is too big. If I were you, I would definitely try a 38. There should only be a .5inch length difference in shoulder to shoulder measurement between a 40 and a 38 anyway. FYI, I have a 38.5...

    When the jacket is unbuttoned do the fronts fall away? The shoulders need to be squared up. The slope of the jacket shoulder is greater than your shoulder. That jacket has fusing out the wazoo. No shaping in the chest to contour with your body as well. You want to check the button position...

    quick question re: topcoat sizing

    In a perfect world, yes. In reality, no. Make sure you wear a jacket and actually try on the coat at the store. If ordering via mail, check the shoulder to shoulder measurements. I wear size 36 suit. I got a size 40 top coat (Benetton) I can barely fit my jacket under. Don't assume anything.

    I find that it is best to not consider how a coat might fit with a suit jacket underneath. A suit jacket shouldnt have a whole lot of padding at the shoulder or at least it shouldnt have enough padding where you have to go a size up in your outerwear. This is just from my experience...
