1786 Russian Reindeer Hide

A selection of the work I have been commissioned to make, using the unique 1786 Russian Reindeer Hide. A remarkable and historic find, but necessarily expensive, because of the need to recover it from the sea bed, then dry it and re-treat the leather, plus it's rarity.

A curved top framed brief case in Russian Reindeer hide. Again the front and back panels were laminated with 1.5mm bridle leather. All hand stitched except for the partition boards top binding.

A 3 pocket Brief Case in Russian Reindeer hide, the leather itself is too limp to use for this construction, so I had to laminate the front and back/flap panels with 1.5mm bridle for stiffness. the strapping is treated in the sale way. All hand stitched except for the strapping which was machine stitched around the edges, and the binding at the top of the partition boards.

An Under-arm Folio case, entirely hand stitched, in Russian Reindeer hide with a pigskin lining, the client did not want a lock, because the folio might have scratched his clients desks when opened flat.

I was commissioned to make this piece in Russian Reindeer hide, for the trade magazine LEATHER for their 125th year anniversary edition. This was commissioned as a flat and unusable piece, to be photographed for the cover of an inclusion with the magazine.

Trying to work out the 'best' cut, this historic leather is just too expensive to waste, or make mistakes with. Some clients want to see the marks and 'defects' that 200+ years of immersion have left in the hides, others want a 'clean' cut. With commissioned work, I will send photographs to the client, so that they can see their case develop, from the hide or butt, through the cutting and construction to the finished case. Shown here is the outside of the underarm folio, embossed B. G.
