Soaking them now won't really be a problem... but they most likely will just stretch back out again after a month of wear, leaving you in the exact same spot you are now. If possible I would just wear a belt. Soaking/washing your jeans more than once every 6 months isn't necessarily bad... but it will just lead to a more uniform fade (less contast, less noticeable whiskering and honeycombs).
If you have worn them and they have stretched out and you want them to shrink back to their original size then just soak in some warm/hot water and hot dry... but they will most likely just stretch back out after some wears... BUT if they haven't been worn they most likely won't shrink that much and you should have bought a size smaller. soak whenever you want... i prefer to do it at the beginning or end... so you don't have to worry about your honeycombs/whiskers...

Uniqlo Regular Fit S-002 Non-Selvage Bought in September 2007. About a year of wear. One wash.
Graphic T's were definitely a fad. If he is able to put a spin on them and go in a more artistic direction it could work... prolly not tho... it will be a lot of hard work and will take a lot of savvy business decisions... i don't know how up to the challenge your mate is... But marketing really is what makes a company... Nudies gained a huge following based on the marketing of their jeans... their story... even though they weren't the first or the best at that price...
As long as keep them subtle you are good. Avoid fancy back pocket stitching like nudies or imperials and IMO you should go for a one wash instead of raw... ernest sewn?...
