There is a bit more nuance going on here. I for one clearly have mixed feelings: you will not find a more ardent supporter of science education and scientific progress, yet I have serious doubts about how R&D in this country (NASA included) is (mis)managed. For starters, more than half of the government R&D is military related - any useful technology that may or may not spill over is an after thought, not a primary goal. Which means that this is a highly inefficient use of...
Isn't misallocation of far greater amounts of money to tax breaks, bailouts, subsidies, and enormous military w/ bloated R&D an even bigger issue?
That's fine, but it is still a waste of resources (like all marketing...). Besides, even though Red Bull is the primary sponsor, the project has received some NASA funding...Misallocation basically - this neither advances science, not improves enyone's life (except redbull shareholders i suppose). Not a good return otherwise. Like a talk I recently heard from a military surgeon that basically said that the wars we're in are terrible, but hey! there's a silver lining -...
Useless, expensive stunt. The suit alone costs a quarter of a million, the balloon another quarter mil, and they went through several of those. As DeGrace Tyson tweeted, this whole edge of space bullshit to scale equals jumping from 1 millimeter above a standard desk globe.
Hm, let's cut through the clutter shall we? At this point, the primary audience this forum caters to are the merchants and advertisers selling their warez on and off the interwebz. There. As for the actual posters, most would pretend to have an intrinsic fascination with clothes, but that's likely a rationalization. Many find it after they've been thoroughly satiated with the mainstream fashion press, and when that level of differentiation and status no longer suffices,...
Chavez has higher approval ratings than Obama (and any politician or political institution in the US). Not to mention that their voter turnout is miles ahead of ours (80%): http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/08/us-venezuela-election-idUSBRE89601Z20121008 Good for the Venezuelans. Democratic socialism FTW
Yes. However, I would not call it indoctrination - indoctrination is instilling ideas without explaining why they are true. The most important part of education is not learning the true facts, but understanding why they are true. That was one of the main reasons why J. S. Mill insisted that even the most unpopular ideas be given voice and be debated, because in the absence of such debates, the conventional wisdom grows stale, forgets its own rationales, or turns into...
It is definitely "celebrated" in the low grades. But it is also more subtle than that --> the significance of Columbus of course is that he "discovered america", but this is ridiculous way to frame it - were there no people living there for thousands of years before he arrived? and if so, wasn't it already discovered? The west-centric perspective is so pervasive that we don't even notice it usually. That history is being written by the winners is not just a cute quip, but a...
Well, this is clearly impossible without postulating, perhaps axiomatically, that the enlightenment values of freedom and reason are to be prioritized and worth pursuing. From that point on, you have no choice but to institute some way of dismissing activities that contradict these principles. The public sphere is already vaguely structured around these principles, but "political correctness", or I don't know what, does get in the way of dismissing apparent nutjobs, some...
For starters, teaching actual historical truth is essential - this is what I in part meant by "propaganda" - sanitized version of history that hides the most important conflicts and controvercies. There doesn't have to be any "central committee". Only an actual commitment to transparent debate. This has to include direct ban on knowingly lying (e.g. on TV or commercials). Here's something to honor Columbus day, celebrated by Disney, the educational establishment, and the like
