Someone mentioned it earlier, but it bears repeating: Women love these things. And if you love women, that should mean something. I wouldn't buy most of them, but my small collection gets far more comments/compliments from women than any other ties I own.
I have, and have used, all three styles. The slide-ons have never worked well for me, as they tend to go askew eventually. The safety-pins are a bit cluttered for my taste. So I now use the barbell style with screw-on ends (mostly silver, but occasionally gold), and order shirts with pre-made holes in conventional collars.
