Frankly, I think that your intended shade of red would make up better as a pair of odd trousers. I may be prejudiced though, as I have meant to have a pair of crimson (and it has to be just the right shade), trousers made up for along time. On the other hand, I really do like the coat shown the illustration taken from Esquire. I think it would be a great addition to a wardrobe that already has all the basics.

If you do decide to shorten the sleeves from the sleeve head, it would be nice if you took and shared pictures of the process with the forum.
As long as you are not wearing the shorts too low, thee length looks fine. I am puzzled as to what type of look you wife is imagining (no snideness implied ).
