On my screen, that top one needs more contrast, and what's ailing the tan outfits isn't (just) the fact that the trou are darker.
Dark trou, light top needs a darker tie to avoid creating a horizontal divide.
Light to mid-gray trou would look nice with the coat, as would tan or stone. I'd avoid unusual colors such as purple, as that would emphasize the theatrical element that is prompting the Willy Wonka comparisons. Simpler is better.
