I've got duty this Monday; it's the first call that I haven't been able to get out of via a student exemption, and I absolutely want no part of the jury thing.

I'm deciding between either dressing up like a dandy (i.e. suit with lots of bright patterns juxtaposed), a club kid (tight black shirt and fancy jeans), or a preppy (pastel polo with popped collar, bright colored pants); just as long as it's something over the top.

How long do these things take, and what kind of questions do you get asked? Is being educated and interested/knowledgable about law/politics a thing you want to play up or down if you're trying to get dismissed?

I fall back on dressing up for the respect-to-the-institution reason. Same reason I did not wear shorts and a T-shirt to my daughter's graduation from HS ceremony at Lincoln Center (although other parents did).

Respect the institution, and the ritual solemnity that the system is in small part dependent on.

None of those modes of dress, standing alone, sound like enough to get you dinged just on appearance. As I posted above, I think you'd need to go into the realm of full costume to have your clothing make a real difference. For example, I wouldn't necessarily have an inclination to bounce a club kid or preppy right off the bat, but I would probably bounce someone who showed up in full Klingon gear.

If you don't want to be selected for jury duty I suggest you wear an NRA cap and a T-shirt that says, "Kill 'em all. Let God sort them out."

Btw, I posted my KKK picture as a joke, but I actually think that people shouldn't try to get out of jury duty. It's a civic duty and one of the central tenants of our democratic system of government and our judicial system and people should not shirk that duty. I doubt that you're so important and busy that you can't spare one day to go down to the courthouse and present for jury duty.

This is funny since everytime I've gone to Jury Duty I've never been chosen. Everytime I always dress carefully in jacket and tie but nothing which is all good with me ;)

bring a baby pacifier on a chain attached to your lapel. bring a baby bottle and use it. Talk often about Mommy. you will be dismissed.
